Bright Club Worcester

On 08, Nov 2014 | In Events | By Nicola Gauld

The Infirmary held the first Bright Club Worcester in the Chapel on the University of Worcester’s City Campus on 24th October. Bright Club is a public event for researchers to present their topic in eight minutes of stand up. Representing Worcester was Professor Maggie Andrews who delivered a terrific set on the Home Front in Worcester during the First World War.

During her talk Maggie weaved in the local experiences of food shortages and the royal suggestion of chewing one’s food for longer to make rations go further and she concluded with intimidating statistics of the soldiers who caught sexually transmitted diseases; given that we were in the old Worcester Royal Infirmary, it was particularly apt to discuss the fact that ladies were treated one day and the soldiers who had been sent home for treatment on another. On closing, the final question was: “Did the soldiers return to Infirmary Walk on ladies day with the plan to extend their stay at home?” The evening proved that serious topics can be viewed through a humorous lens to share research, ideas and also make the information more memorable for a wider audience.
