Call For Papers: ‘Building up the indomitable spirit of the army’: Military Chaplains of WWI
On 30, Nov 2014 | In Uncategorized | By Nicola Gauld
To help mark the centenary of the Great War, Bath Spa University and Downside Abbey will hold a one-day colloquium to discuss the part that the chaplain played.
The colloquium falls around the anniversary of the 150th birthday of Dom Stephen Rawlinson, a Downside monk, who served as Assistant Principal Chaplain on the Western Front. With fifteen members of the Downside monastic community serving as Chaplains to the Forces, Downside Abbey is keen to further the knowledge of this subject, whilst Bath Spa University’s campus at Newton Park, once a hospital for wounded soldiers during the war, is a perfect setting for such a conference.
Proposals for 25-minute papers are welcome and as an example, papers may consider:
• Different religions approaches to the role of the chaplain during the conflict.
• Individual chaplains and their actions.
• The influence of the higher echelons of each religion on the chaplain.
• The experiences of different nationalities chaplains.
• Different experiences of chaplains in different theatres of operations, services or locations.
Deadline for submissions is 28th February, 2015
For all proposals please submit a 200-word abstract and title, along with contact details via the link below.
