The Diary of Dorothy Priest, March 14th 1915

Yesterday mother and Joan and I met Daddy in town and went to see the three City Battalions march from Calthorpe Park to Victoria Square.
They were followed in the procession by the King Edward’s OTC [Officer Training Corps] and a number of Scouts, including many “Red Feather” Scouts and pipers, also I believe some Sea Scouts. This is the third procession I have seen in which soldiers were the most important part. The first was when the Volunteers who had returned from the Boer War were met and escorted through the town. The other was the Territorials and Reserves who had a procession a year or two ago to try and wake up an interest in the Territorials. Little did we think then that we should now be fighting in the greatest war that has ever been known. Daddy says that within a month Greece, Italy, Romania and Bulgaria will have joined in. Germany is beginning to know what hunger means now. Do any of the older Germans ever think of the Seige of Paris in 1870 (or 1871).
