A special exhibition on the Scottish Women’s Hospitals for Foreign Service, curated by MSc Museum Studies postgraduate student Bethany Lane, is now showing through to the end of August in the University of Glasgow Memorial Chapel.
The exhibition text panels are now also available as a PDF download on our Resources page (please note that it takes several seconds to load).
The Scottish Women’s Hospitals for Foreign Service were started by University of Edinburgh graduate, Dr Elsie Inglis. At the outbreak of war in 1914, Dr Inglis organised a field medical unit entirely staffed by women, including a number of University of Glasgow graduates and students, ready for service abroad. They were supported by the Scottish Federation of Women’s Suffrage Societies and the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies. Inglis and her colleagues saw this as an opportunity not just to aid the war effort, but also to highlight the abilities of female medical personnel.

The University of Glasgow Memorial Chapel is open to the public 9.00-17.00 Monday-Friday.
