Visitors to the Birmingham Central Post Office yesterday afternoon were astonished to see a young woman produce a purse bag and deposit on the counter, without showing the slightest sign on embarrassment a pile of sovereigns and half sovereigns, totalling about £100 which she exchanged for a series of war certificates. It was an unusual sight these days to see so much gold. The young lady behind the counter seemed to take the incident as one of everyday occurrence. She counted the sovereigns into piles of twenties, and scooped them into her drawer.
