RETIREMENT OF A BIRMINGHAM POSTAL OFFICIAL.
The retirement on pension is announced, after 46 years’ service, of Mr. H. B. Britten, a superintendent of the Telegraph Department, G.P.O., Birmingham; during which period he served under six postmasters, for many years being attached to the special racing staff. When Mr. Britten joined the Government Telegraphs, the head office of that department was in Cannon Street, the apparatus then in use, as compared with the present-day instruments, being of a very ancient type. During his career Mr. Britten has witnessed the introduction and development of many modern telegraphic systems—notably, Baudot, Creed, Gell, &c. He takes with him in his retirement the good wishes of many old friends and colleagues.
