PIG-KEEPING IN BIRMINGHAM.
Mr. John Malcolm, the Superintendent of the Veterinary Department of the Birmingham Corporation, has issued a leaflet containing information useful to intending pig keepers. It suggests that prospective buyers who lack practical experience should consult a farmer, pork-butcher, or other expert, if possible, so as to secure the most suitable pig for their purpose, and reminds those who desire to erect a pigsty less than 20 yards from a house or road that they should write to the Inspector of Nuisances, Public Health Department, Council House, so that an inspector may view the site and, if it is approved, grant permission to erect the sty. The essential points in the Corporation by-laws that pigs shall be kept so as not to be a nuisance or dangerous to the health of the neighbourhood are pointed out, and instruction is given with regard moving a pig and the feeding, illness, selling, and killing of the animal, as well as advice in respect to curing bacon.
