LICENSING OFFENCES
SEQUEL TO BIRMINGHAM PARTY
In the Second Court of Birmingham Police, to-day, William Atkinson, licensee of the Highgate Tavern, Moseley Road, was fined £5 each of two summonses for supplying intoxicating liquor during prohibited hours, contrary to the Central Control Board’s Order.
On the evening of Saturday, March 31, there had been a dinner party at the house, which broke up at 9.30. It was alleged that at 11.25 p.m., when the police visited it, there was a drink on the table, and there were present in the house Harry Maddocks, a polisher, living in Emily Street, and Mary Vyse, a charwoman, of Conybere Street. Mr. Jeffries, for the defence, urged that Mrs. Vyse the charwoman, was employed on the premises, and Maddocks acted as a week-end potman. Defendant said the man and woman had been helping to wash and take stock for the brewery. Summonses against the landlord for permitting drink to consumed, and against Maddocks and Vyse for consuming drink during prohibited hours, were dismissed.
