PRESENTATION TO CANON SUTTON
TRIBUTE TO HIS TWENTY-TWO YEARS’ WORK AT ASTON
The Rev. Canon Sutton, who for nearly 22 years was the vicar of Aston, was last night the recipient of a cheque for £200 and an illuminated album address. Alderman Edward Ansell presided.
In making the presentation to Canon Sutton, the Chairman said when their late vicar came to Aston 22 years of age, at the age of sixty years, he found the parish, financially speaking, more or less in a state of chaos. His predecessor, Bishop Knox, left a legacy behind him, which younger men than Canon Sutton failed to appreciate. But Canon Sutton knew the position and what its financial obligations were, and he had succeeded in disposing of them. He instituted Thank-offering Sunday, which had proved a great success, no less a sum than £18,200 having been secured from that source alone. He was also successful in the rebuilding of St James’ Church, which was destroyed by the storm of 1895.
Canon Sutton, in response, thanked all sincerely for their gifts, and paid tribute to Alderman Ansell for his consistent generosity to Aston Church.
Miss Sutton was also presented with a gold, diamond, and pearl pendant, which the Canon suitably acknowledged.
