BIRMINGHAM MUNITION GIRL’S ROMANCE
The rather pitiful denouement of a young girl munitions worker’s romance was revealed at Wirral Board of Guardians, when the reliving officer for New Ferry said he had admitted to the infirmary a girl, aged 17, who came from Birmingham. He said she was a munition worker in that city, and had started to walk from there to Liverpool with an Australian soldier, with the idea of getting married. They started on Wednesday of last week, and on Monday they arrived at Chester, having slept by the roadside at nights. Whilst they were at Chester the soldier, who was in uniform, disappeared. It was alleged he had stolen a bicycle, and made good his escape on that. The girl continued her journey alone until she arrived at Eastham, where she was detained by the police on account of her destitute condition.
