BRAVE ASTON GIRL
EMPIRE MEDAL FOR MUNITION WORKER
Miss Dolly Gladys Vickers, who has been awarded the new Empire Order Medal for meritorious conduct in connection with a munitions works, is, it transpires, a 17-year-old munition worker at a Birmingham works and lives in the Aston district.
The official notification of the honour states that a fuse on which she was working exploded, burning her hand badly. She picked it up while it was still burning, carried it several yards, and threw it outside the building, thereby preventing any danger of the other loaded fuses in the hut becoming ignited.
It is gratifying to learn that Miss Vickers has fully recovered from the injuries consequent upon her brave act and is still working in the factory.
