RESCUE UNDER FIRE

WAR HONOUR FOR A MIDLAND MAN

Pte. Harry Thomas, Rifle Brigade, 3 bk., 46 Wheeler-street, Birmingham, aged 27, was awarded the Military Medal for voluntarily going out under a heavy shell fire and bringing in wounded while acting as stretcher-bearer. Thomas who used to be employed by Messrs. Mitchells and Butlers, joined up in August, 1914. His gallant conduct had twice previously been brought to notice. Once was for jumping into the Yser at Ypres and rescuing a comrade, Corpl. State, of Smethwick, from drowning. On the other occasion he guided “a party” to the firing line under shellfire.
