MAYORALTY FOR FORMER BIRMINGHAM JOURNALIST
Councillor Oswald Holmes, who on the unanimous invitation of the Pontefract Town Council has agreed to accept the Mayoralty for the coming year, was for several years a journalist in Birmingham, and is now proprietor of the “Pontefract and Castleford Advertiser.” He was secretary of the Birmingham Press Club in 1893-94, during the presidencies of the late Mr. H. Labouchere, M.P., and the late Mr. Lawson Tait. He is a Past Master of St. Oswald Lodge of Freemasons and a Past Principal of the Chapter and has for many years been warden of the Pontefract Parish Church. He has been a member of the Town Council for thirteen years. The Mayoress-Elect, who is an active social and church worker, is the elder daughter of the late Mr. Henry Worrall, of Moseley, and was formerly an acceptable singer at many Birmingham concerts.
