THE REV. E. F. M. MACCARTHY
The death of the Rev. E.F.M. MacCarthy removes a venerable and familiar figure from city life. It is a distinct loss to the community. For more than half a century Mr. MacCarthy took a leading part in educational affairs, and as headmaster of Five Ways School must have influenced for the greatest good the lives of thousands of boys. For a quarter of a century he was a valuable member of the old School Board, and in many ways rendered incalculable service to the cause of education. In politics he was a staunch Liberal, and he remained a loyal to the party when times of stress and strain were experienced, and divisions of opinion split the ranks. His services will ever be gratefully remembered. The suddenness of the end came as a great shock to his many friends, who, despite his advanced age, believed that several years of activity lay ahead of him. We shall remember him with great affection, for his whole life was one of usefulness and of devotion to the causes which he had at heart.
