£2,000,000 TANK DAY
BIRMINGHAM REACHES WEEK’S TOTAL OF SIX MILLION AND A QUARTER
Birmingham, which has during the week been engaged in a great effort to surpass Manchester’s War Bond tank total, has “won out.” Manchester subscribed £4,500,000. Yesterday Birmingham, by subscribing £2,000,000 in a single day, brought its total for the week to £6,250,329. There was extraordinary excitement at the close. The Lord Mayor, addressing a crowd estimating at 100,000, said that Birmingham had done a remarkable thing. Every bank in the country to-morrow should be selling the new “easy-to-buy” £5 National War Bond over its counter. The Newcastle tank up to yesterday evening took £3,032,324, and the Bradford tank £3,615,000.
