HISTORY OF MEDICINE AND HEALTH DEVELOPMENT SEMINAR
“Nursing on the Home Front: Britain, 1914-1918”
Dr Stuart Wildman, University of Birmingham
Abstract: ‘Between 1914 and 1919, over two million sick and injured men were repatriated and cared for in a variety of hospitals within the UK. Surprisingly, there are few published accounts of nursing on the home front during the war and less about its effects on civilian hospitals and the district nursing services. This paper examines personal accounts and other sources, in the Imperial War Museum and elsewhere, in order to describe the work of nurses caring for sick and injured serviceman. It also brings to light issues with the recruitment, organization and work of those nurses who continued to care for the civilian population.’
