CHILD WELFARE
The war is compelling thoughtful men and women to face new and truly momentous issues, and to reconsider their attitude towards old ones. Amongst these few are of greater importance than the question of child welfare. The drain upon our young manhood- which is part of the price the nation has to pay for security and freedom- renders attention to the well-being of our children more than ever necessary. It would perhaps not be too much to say that upon this more than any other matter depends the future position of the nation.
The question is receiving careful and unremitting attention, and by no one is it viewed with greater practical interest than by the Independent Order of Rechabites. This society has long made a special feature of work amongst children and young people, and just now is engaged in a special campaign to secure a large addition to its Juvenile Membership. Besides providing certain benefits as the leading Temperance Friendly Society, the Order devotes its energies to training its juvenile members, inculcating principles of temperance, thrift, and business habits, and laying the foundations of a healthy and vigorous adult life.
