SAILORS’ FLAG DAY IN BIRMINGHAM.
The “flag day” collection in Birmingham on Saturday was in aid of the British and Foreign Sailors Society, which in May of this year celebrated its centenary, and behalf of which a fund of £250,000 is being raised to ensure the continuance end expansion of the work. During the first eight months 1917 alone 16,654 men from 584 mined or torpedoed ships were received and cared for in the society’s homes. Nearly 1,000 friendless sailor prisoners of war in enemy countries are being regularly supplied with food and clothing by the society, indigent families are being assisted, and sailors’ orphans cared for.
