HEALTH OF BIRMINGHAM.
The health of the citizens of Birmingham continues very satisfactory. Last week the total death rate was equal to 8.3 per thousand of the population per annum, compared with 8.5 in the previous week and 9.2 in the corresponding week of last year. The rate last week was the lowest since the week ended August 10, when it 8.0, which was exceptionally favourable. Two deaths were due to measles and 75 new cases were recorded, while 21 fresh cases of scarlet fever were registered. The number of patients in hospital suffering from this disease is 105, an increase of 10 on the week. There was one death from diphtheria, 11 fresh cases were notified, and 77 patients are under treatment. Whooping cough is steadily disappearing, for last week there were but seven fresh cases and only one death. Diarrhoea was responsible for five deaths, respiratory diseases for 19, and influenza for one. There were 12 deaths from pulmonary tuberculosis, 48 new cases were notified, and at the close of the week 569 patients were in the city sanatoria.
