THE RABIES OUTBREAK

PRECAUTIONARY MEASURES IN BIRMINGHAM

Considerable apprehension has been caused by the outbreak of rabies in Devon and Cornwall, and, as was announced in Parliament yesterday, the Board of Agriculture are taking every possible step to prevent the spread of the disease from the districts affected. The placing in quarantine of dogs that have been taken to the counties mentioned during the last five months is a very necessary measure.

Enquiries in Birmingham show that several dog owners have already taken this course, and Mr. J. Malcolm, of the Corporation Veterinary Department, has a number of animals in quarantine, but so far none has revealed any symptoms of the disease. The utmost vigilance is, however, being observed, and it is hoped that in the interests of the public safety local dog-owners will loyally co-operate with the authorities in the matter.

Should it be necessary to enforce a Muzzling Order it is stated that Birmingham will be able to supply at once eight thousand muzzles weekly.
