A Batch of Bigamists.

Four prisoners convicted of bigamy on Tuesday came up for sentence.

Emily Elizabeth Hammond (30), housekeeper, was sentenced three months’ imprisonment.

Thomas Flowers (28), miner, was ordered twelve months’ imprisonment without hard labour, in order that his Army pension might not be prejudiced.

Elizabeth Helena Room (26), rubber worker, went to prison for six months with hard labour, and John Joseph Carabini, who aided and abetted her in the offence, was sentenced to three months’ hard labour.

William Chester (40), a lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, also convicted of bigamy, was sent to prison for eight months without hard labour.

The Commissioner commented on the fact that there had lately been an epidemic of bigamy, and judges had resolved that much more severe punishment should be given to those guilty of the offence.
