HOW THE MIDLANDS POLLED.
LORD LEWISHAM BEATEN AT WEST BROMWICH.
SMETHWICK REJECTS MISS PANKHURST.
The results in the Midland boroughs generally followed the anticipated lines, but there were one or two surprises. The most notable was West Bromwich, where the Labour nominee, Mr. F. O. Roberts, defeated Viscount Lewisham, the sitting member. The last named, however, who has been serving his country the Army, was unable, through illness, to take any part in the election, thus giving his opponent a considerable advantage. As in other parts of country, candidates with Pacifist leanings fared badly, Mr. Outhwaite being heavily beaten at Hanley, and Mr. D. M. Mason finishing at the foot of the poll in Coventry. At Smethwick Miss Pankhurst failed to convince the electors—though by 775 only.
