It is rumoured that the Kaiser’s third son is killed or has died from his wounds [this turned out to be untrue].  They say the Germans are not running away so fast now.

I should think they would take a good deal more beating when they are fighting to keep us out of their country than when they are in a foreign country and fighting because they are made to, so that there is tough work before us. [Except where otherwise stated “us” means the Allies all through this book]
