[Sir John] French is a genius.
While Kaiser Bill thought our men were in the middle of the allies’ line and his own best in the North where they had only the French to beat, [Sir John] French quietly got all our men up there too, so that’s why they never got Calais. I went to a lecture tonight on Belgium before and during the war by M. Paul Blaise (?) of Louvain. It was all extremely interesting. Among other things he suggested that this war would be ended by another battle on the field of Waterloo. He said there was room there for another mound like that with the lion on, and on it would be a lovely eagle with its wings broken. Daddy thinks there will be another battle there, too; he says it is an ideal place for a battle. It wouldn’t be the first time two battles have taken place at the same spot in two separate wars, like Falkirk.
