The Diary of Dorothy Priest, November 15th 1914

I haven’t been writing during the last few days because there has been no news and it would only be a waste of space to keep on writing “no news”.

The cutting attached is from today’s “Weekly Dispatch”, which I saw when I came home from Church.  The Rector announced it before the sermon so I was not surprised.  The Rector did not mention him by name but we all knew who the old Field Marshal was, who for years had been trying to improve the army and who had gone to France to greet the Indians.  One thing that struck me when we came out of Church was that the sun was shining gloriously just as it did the day King Edward was buried.  We had Chopin’s Dead March after the service.   Only last night we were looking at his picture in the “Mail” and mother was so glad he was going to see his Indians in France.  He must have been dying just about that time. I never realised ‘til today what I really thought about him.  I seem to feel it much more than when King Edward died.  I am glad he died at the front with the Indians there fighting for us on European soil against Europeans.  Mother said she thought of the words “Faithful unto Death”, but I cannot put into words what I think or rather feel.
