A Service of Commemoration and Hope for the Future: Stories of World War One from Edgbaston and Ladywood
As part of the centenary of the First World War, on September 20th 2015 we at St George’s Church are having a service to commemorate the lives of local people in our parish in Edgbaston and Ladywood who died in the war and to remember the impact this had on families and the community.
This will include a particular focus on individuals, including Raymond Lodge who died aged 19 in September 1915. Raymond lived opposite the church and his memorial was placed by his parents in St George’s. His family wanted to mark the centenary of his death with a service of commemoration. In the service we will also be seeking to commit ourselves to the making of peace for the future and to all that makes for a strong community and society. We expect to dedicate a Peace Garden designed by our children on the day.
How you can help!
Alongside the story of Raymond Lodge, we are keen to be able to profile additional individual stories. This is where we hope you can help us:
We would be really pleased to hear from individual families in Edgbaston and Ladywood, who live here or come to school here, about your connection to the events of World War 1. This might be through family members who served or died in the conflict or in other ways. We want to be able to honour these stories in the church service and potentially have a display in church that illustrates the different ways in which people and communities were involved and affected. Today in Edgbaston and Ladywood we are a community of people from a wide range of national and ethnic origins, many of whose forebears took part in the war effort. We are hoping that our stories will reflect this diversity.
Please consider telling us your story however short it may be!
What you submit will be treated very respectfully and will not be passed on to any third party without your permission.

Vicar
