Event: Poets & the Crisis of Faith in and after the First World War
On 06, May 2015 | In Events | By Nicola Gauld
A talk by John Lampen, M.Phil., Dept. of War Studies, King’s College London with readings by Jane Lapotaire, Honorary Associate Artist, Royal Shakespeare Company.
10 May, 3-4pm, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery
For many of those who lived during the First World War, their experiences led to a crisis and often a loss of faith. Modern European warfare, blessed by the clergy on both sides, seemed to show the hollowness of belief. People came to doubt what had previously seemed certain and were no longer able to believe in a loving and omnipotent God. Some turned to poetry in an attempt to make sense of the incomprehensible.
John Lampen, author of Findings: Poets and the Crisis of Faith (Wallingford, PA: 1993) will explore this crisis of faith that was so widespread during and after the First World War. He will be accompanied by Jane Lapotaire, well-known Shakespearean actor, who will read the poems to accompany John’s talk.
The event is expected to last approximately an hour from 3pm – 4pm, and takes place in the AV Room at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery (access through Gas Hall on Edmund Street).
Admission is FREE but booking is required.
