Saturday 26th September saw visitors to Cardiff Castle greeted by WW1 Tommies, sample traditional wartime recipes and discover more about military medical techniques at the Poppies, Postcards and Periscopes event. The day was organised by the Cardiff Remembers project in partnership with the Firing Line, Cardiff Castle Museum of the Welsh Soldier.
Glamorgan Archives were on hand to talk about their amazing collections, the Women’s Archive of Wales discussed how the role of women changed during the period and Cardiff University shared photographs of Egypt and Palestine, highlighting stories which have until now been overlooked.
Staff from Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales have digitised their First World War collection and were able to show visitors items including postcards sent from the Front Line, prosthetic limbs and registration cards via their online database http://www.museumwales.ac.uk/first-world-war/
Families enjoyed making trench periscopes and hearing about what life was like for soldiers serving in the Cardiff Pals. They tried unusual food courtesy of food historian Seren Evans-Charrington and loved watching Officer Roger Morgan perform theatrical amputations on the soldiers.
The Lord Mayor of Cardiff Cllr David Walker attended the event and even helped to judge the WW1 Bake Off, crowning Michael Fletcher victorious with his cheesecake.
The event was a great success.
