“NELSON DAY” IN BIRMINGHAM
Today a street collection was made in Birmingham and district on behalf of naval charities for the education of the children of officers and men and to extend the Navy League scheme for the training of boys for a sea career. The local arrangements were carried out under the direction of Dr. Bostock Hill, Mr. A. J. Leeson, and Mr. Thomas, of the Birmingham branch of the Navy League, and it was hoped to raise £1,000. There were about a couple of thousand volunteer collectors in the streets, the central area of the city being entrusted to 500 girls in the employ of insurance offices. Captain Davis was responsible for the collection in the Small Heath district. Over £200 was received in donations. Collections were taken at most of the theatres and music halls.
