LOCAL SOLDIERS HONOURED

EDGBASTON OFFICERS GALLANTRY

Lieut E. G. Freeman, Durham Light Infantry, who was awarded the Military Cross, is the eldest son of the late Mr. George Freeman, of Edgbaston. He was educated at Five Ways School, and is well known in Birmingham being partner in the firm of G. Freeman, Edwardian Works, New John Street West. He joined the O.T.C at the University at the outbreak of war, and was granted his commission in August, 1915. He was recently made lieutenant, the appointment dates back to June last. He was married in July to Miss I. Mercer, of Galashiels. The report states that he led a successful night raid and captured prisoners, taking one with his own hands. Though wounded, he brought in a seriously wounded man of his own regiment whom he found in “No Man’s Land,” carrying him a great part of the way. He afterwards went out again over “No Man’s Land” in search of the three other wounded men. It was largely owing to his coolness and courage that the attack was successful.
