BIRMINGHAM FIRES

The Birmingham Fire Brigade was called shortly before 4.30 this morning to the button manufactory of Charles Edkins and Sons, 16, Summer Row. Arriving upon the scene, the men found a workshop and contents on the ground floor and a staircase leading to the third floor on fire. A jet was attached to the main, and after the men had been engaged an hour and a quarter the fire was extinguished. Somewhat severe damage was done to the outside of the building, inside the damage was slight. The origin is unknown.

Last evening a fire at the grocer’s shop of W. Tranter, 53, Bartford Road, engaged the attentions of the brigade. The outbreak, due to a gas light coming into contact with some of the contents of the shop, was promptly got under.

Shortly before nine last evening a two-ton motor van belonging to Mr. G. Butler, motor transport worker, caught fire in Edgbaston Park Road. After half an hour’s work the fire was extinguished. The driver, William Hignell, received injuries to his hands, calling for first aid treatment by the firemen.
