VOTES FOR WOMEN
DEBATE ON PEER’S REFERENDUM PROPOSAL
When the House of Lords again went into Committee yesterday on the Representation the People Bill, Viscount Peel moved an amendment proving that the vote should be given to women who, although not admitted to a University degree, had passed such examinations and kept such residence at the University as would entice her to receive a degree if she were a man.
He explained that the amendment was framed to meet the case of Oxford and Cambridge, which did not give degrees to women.
On the suggestion of Lord Parker the amendment was allowed to stand over until the report stage, in order that he might confer with the authorities of Cambridge University to ascertain how far the proposal would react on the internal government of the university.
