Women and Local Government.
In estimating the probable results of woman suffrage, as established by the Representation of the People Act, attention is usually devoted solely to the Parliamentary election side of the matter. The Women’s Local Government Society is stimulating attention to the manner in which there has been replaced the previously existing local government franchises in the United Kingdom, noting that a woman who is not disqualified as an alien or otherwise may be entitled to be registered as a local government elector, either by virtue of her own qualification if she be 21 the last day of the qualifying period, or by virtue of her husband’s local government qualification if she be over 30 the like date. It is to be observed, however, that until the first register to be prepared under the Act comes into force nothing in the statute is to affect any local government register for the time being in force or any local government elections.
