ENTERTAINING THE WOUNDED.
The Birmingham Athletic club presented an interesting Whitsuntide programme to the wounded and convalescent soldiers at the 1st Southern General Hospital, Bournbrook, on Saturday. The boxing was as usual a big feature of the entertainment, as presented by H. Brown v. Sid Fellows, Martin v Casey, Sol. Adams v. F. Timmins, the Bros. Dan and H. Hanks, with Sol. Adam’s Boys and Timmins’ “Tiny Tots.” The vocal music was entrusted to Messrs. Bert. Holmes, J. Swoffield, and J. Hyde; the instrumentalists were Mr. G. Biddle (dulcimer) and Mr. E. Payne (concertina). In the military defensive work Messrs. Alfred Allen and S. J. Beech gave some spirited bouts with the quarterstaff, and Mr. Raymond Allen met Mr. E. J. Phillips with the single sticks. Mr Jack Hulbert’s “Sampson” sketches Miss Hilda Jone’s pianoforte accompaniments completed a most acceptable entertainment.
The sailors’ and soldiers’ Sunday matinee at the Theatre Royal, Birmingham, yesterday, was, as usual, well attended. The vocalists were Miss Made Smith and Mr. Ernest Frith. Mr. Percy Edgar rendered character sketches from Dickens, and enjoyable selections were contributed by the orchestra.

The dulcimer player was Mr. Charles Biddle. (not G Biddle!)> He was a regular performer at these entertainments organised by Birmingham Athletics CLub.
I am doing research on him and other dulcimer players from Birmingham, as they had a particular and distinct tradition.
If anyone has any information about dulcimers amongst friends and family in Birmingham, I would love to hear from you.
