DISCHARGED SOLDIER’S CLAIM

At the Birmingham Munitions Tribunal, yesterday, a workman claimed compensation in lieu of notice. The firm advertised for a man to train, and claimant, a discharged soldier, was engaged five weeks ago at a wage of 45s. a week. The fourth week his wages were increased to 50s. a week. The following week, as claimant said his former employers had offered him £3 a week to return to them, a member of the firm rang up claimant’s former employers, and as they said they had made no such offer claimant was told to “clear out.”

Claimant produced letters from his former employers showing clearly that they had offered to take him back into their service, though they did not state what his wages were to be. He returned to his former employers on April 5 at a wage of £2 14s. a week without bonus.

The Tribunal were of opinion that claimant had done nothing to warrant immediate dismissal, and awarded him 50s.
