WOMEN TRAM DRIVERS

NOT IN FAVOUR IN BIRMINGHAM.

In many cities and large towns women drivers have been introduced upon the tramways, owing to the depletion of the traffic staffs. The question has been under consideration in Birmingham, but, in view of heavy traffic and the steep gradients, the employment of women drivers Birmingham is not regarded with favour. For some months many discharged soldiers have been given positions on the city tramways, and the hope is entertained that it may be possible in this way, together with the assistance given by volunteer drivers, of whom there are nearly 300, to maintain a satisfactory service. Birmingham was the pioneer in this volunteer movement, which now obtains in many places.
