COMMUNAL KITCHENS IN BIRMINGHAM.

The recommendation to increase the number of national kitchens and restaurants, and so save coal and gas in cooking, has been anticipated some extent in Birmingham. The city already possesses a central kitchen in Windsor Street, and four district depots for distribution of cooked meals situate respectively in Moseley Road, Monument Road, and Bristol Street, and in St. Martin’s Sunday School, Alcester Street. Between two and three thousand portions of food are being supplied daily from these depots, and so much appreciated has been the movement that the local Food Control Committee are now looking out for suitable sites wherein to establish other depots and kitchens. It is also hoped shortly to add large canteen to the central kitchen in Windsor Street.
