As part of Birmingham City Council’s contribution to the First World War commemorations, Bereavement Services are planning a number of projects across various cemeteries and crematoria which are designed to appropriately mark the war years and honour the sacrifices and contributions made by Brummies during the Great War.

Installation of Memorials and Development of Memorial Gardens

The 100th anniversary is to be marked at a number of cemeteries in which service men who died during the conflict are buried by the opening of new Gardens of Remembrance or by the unveiling of a stand alone memorial.

Commemoration Service

A Service of Commemoration will be held in the crematorium chapel at Lodge Hill Cemetery and Crematorium on Sunday 16th November 2014 at 2.00pm. The service is to be followed by the dedication of a Peace Meadow and the unveiling of the war memorial where wreaths will be laid by representatives from the City Council and the Armed Forces.

Brummie Memorabilia Display

As part of a heritage weekend arranged to take place in September 2014 war medals, uniforms, and memorabilia from the Birmingham Pals Regiment, the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, together with photographs recording contributions to the war effort by Birmingham people on the home front will be on display in the Lodge House at Brandwood End Cemetery.

Information Panels

A number of reception areas will have information panels installed displaying a roll of honour of the fallen and a presentation documenting the contribution to the war effort made by Birmingham and a number of her citizens. Incorporated into the presentation will be details of war heroes honoured for their bravery.

Historic Walks

Lodge Hill and Brandwood End Cemeteries are developing historic walks and accompanying information leaflets highlighting the graves of notable people who made the ultimate sacrifice.
