Rare Film Footage Shows Life on the Home Front
The North West Film Archive opens its vaults to share compelling footage of life on the home front in North West England. Drawing on rare archive footage we feature amongst others, the Accrington Pals, the Lancashire Fusiliers and the Cheshire Regiment as they prepare for active service on the Western Front.

Bright Club Worcester

The Infirmary held the first Bright Club Worcester in the Chapel on the University of Worcester’s City Campus on 24th October. Bright Club is a public event for researchers to present their topic in eight minutes of stand up. Representing Worcester was Professor Maggie Andrews who delivered a terrific set on the Home Front in Worcester during the First World War.

On the 11th of November 2014 at 11 minutes past 11am, a two minute silence will be observed on Brixton’s Windrush Square honouring the fallen soldiers of First and Second World Wars. This will be followed by the unveiling of an African and Caribbean War Memorial commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War.
WW1 in the Vale now in Pershore

Amid the many events to commemorate the First World War, one of the most visually striking is surely the poppy installation at the Tower of London. The mass of red ceramic poppies, individually hand-crafted and planted by volunteers in the moat is part of an extensive learning and engagement programme being run Historic Royal Palaces that gets us to think more broadly about why it is we are remembering, and how.

Somme Sunday, to be held on the 6th of July at Aston Parish Church, is the only Somme Sunday event held in England.
Somme Sunday is marked on the first Sunday of July each year. This is a special Sunday in Aston because many, many men from Aston were killed on July 1st 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. The Royal Warwickshire Regiment, which recruited a lot of local men, was one of the first into action that day and suffered very heavy losses.
