H.M. George Vth has gone to the front to see his troops. As all the papers take care to point out, he is the first British King to do so since George II fought at Dettingen, which, by a strange chance, is somewhere about the same part of Europe.

Our men have made a successful air raid on Zeebrugge, a German North Sea naval base or something and I think smashed it up. We are doing well all round. The Red Cross exam was today at 6.30. It might have been worse, but it was not over nice. Anyway it is over, all but the result.

The Prince has gone as aide de camp to Sir John French. Lord Roberts’ body was brought home yesterday. The money to pay for the war is to come from tea, beer and income taxes, over £300,000,000, I think.

The Emden is officially announced as captured or destroyed. I think an Australian ship drove her ashore and she was burnt. I hope the captain is safe! He is a gentleman if no other German is.

I came home yesterday. I saw two Highlanders on platform 4, New Street, and one on platform 5, where I was. There had been a parade or something. I think from what Daddy says the Germans are going to make a very big attack this week.
