Project: Brandwood End Cemetery & WW1

Swanshurst School recently undertook a WW1 project which involved a trip to Brandwood End Cemetery in Birmingham. The students were tasked with finding the graves of soldiers who had served in the Labour Corps during the War.

“It seemed quiet as we advanced up a slope towards the wood after the noise of the bombardment. The boys were steady, each taking courage from one another and the encouragement of our young officers. Suddenly all hell broke loose as machine guns opened up on us from the front and from the flank. We stood no chance and the boys were everywhere falling, but we kept moving forward”.

Uncovering hidden histories of black wartime service: Mapping complementary work in the area

One of the objectives of the Minding Black Histories in War Times project (see previous post) is to map out complementary work on African and West Indies involvement in the WW1 being undertaken in the West Midlands and nationally. In addition to recent academic presentations/outputs, there are a number of community organisations (many of whom are funded through the HLF) seeking to uncover hidden histories of black wartime service.

Discovering the WW1 Home Front: Children and charities, food and farms (Hempsted, Gloucestershire) considers the impact of WW1 upon rural communities in the UK by looking at the changes brought about in Hempsted, a small village in Gloucestershire. The project aims to ‘hone in’ on the local area in order to explore, conserve and share the lives of people on the Home Front between 1914 and 1918.

Preparations are underway for the launch of Voices of War and Peace, the University of Birmingham’s new First World War Engagement Centre, an Arts & Humanities Research Council initiative in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The launch will take place on March 21st from 12-2.30pm in the Library of Birmingham’s Studio Theatre.
