Event: 70th Anniversary of VE Day
The commemorations will begin with a two-minute silence by the Hall of Memory. The programme of entertainment will include: a 1940’s themed fashion show, hair and make-up workshops, a tea dance, school workshops, a re-enactment of the Royal Family balcony scene, Veteran’s Parade, street party, make do and mend workshops, and a sing-a-long. Event: Lord Mayor’s Show
This year’s Lord Mayor’s Show Commemorates the role of Women and Faith in the First World War. The Council House will be open to the public with Former Lord Mayors and Lady Mayoresses guiding the public around the building. The Council House basement will be open to the public where First World War Memorials are on display. Event: Big Brum Buz WW1 History Tour
Birmingham has a fascinating story to tell about its involvement in the First World War. Starting at the iconic Town Hall you will hear about Neville Chamberlain’s rousing inspirational speech and the massive recruiting parade in Victoria Square. Only in 1871, with the repeal of the Test Acts, were nonconformists allowed to attend universities in England and Wales and join the medical and legal professions. During the Great War, Talbot House in Poperinge, Belgium, a few short miles behind the front line, became a haven for thousands of allied troops – a ‘home from home’ where they enjoyed some home comforts and remembered the men that they really were.
