The North West Film Archive opens its vaults to share compelling footage of life on the home front in North West England. Drawing on rare archive footage we feature amongst others, the Accrington Pals, the Lancashire Fusiliers and the Cheshire Regiment as they prepare for active service on the Western Front.

The Prince has gone as aide de camp to Sir John French. Lord Roberts’ body was brought home yesterday. The money to pay for the war is to come from tea, beer and income taxes, over £300,000,000, I think.

The Prince is going or has gone to the front. Yesterday and today I have been busy knitting helmets and learning the First Aid ready for the exam tomorrow week. From now on I shall not write unless there is some news.

The Emden is officially announced as captured or destroyed. I think an Australian ship drove her ashore and she was burnt. I hope the captain is safe! He is a gentleman if no other German is.

Bright Club Worcester

The Infirmary held the first Bright Club Worcester in the Chapel on the University of Worcester’s City Campus on 24th October. Bright Club is a public event for researchers to present their topic in eight minutes of stand up. Representing Worcester was Professor Maggie Andrews who delivered a terrific set on the Home Front in Worcester during the First World War.

I came home yesterday. I saw two Highlanders on platform 4, New Street, and one on platform 5, where I was. There had been a parade or something. I think from what Daddy says the Germans are going to make a very big attack this week.

On the 11th of November 2014 at 11 minutes past 11am, a two minute silence will be observed on Brixton’s Windrush Square honouring the fallen soldiers of First and Second World Wars. This will be followed by the unveiling of an African and Caribbean War Memorial commemorating the 100th anniversary of the First World War.

A great life and death struggle is now going on in Belgium. It says in the paper that someone writing from Berlin mentions the Crown prince’s funeral, and that another paper says he is alive. The Kaiser is reported to have narrowly escaped capture near Moscow.

Hopeful news, but very little of it. The King of Belgium is a fine man, going about among his soldiers as if he were one of themselves. The King of Romania died a few days ago, not a bad thing as he was a pro-German. The new King isn’t, or at any rate not, nearly as strong.
